Additional Information | While there are virtually no ancient
monuments in Merstham or Gatton, both have a very long
and interesting history. Alex's talk focuses on both
the national characters that were based in Merstham and on
the key owners of Gatton's "rotten" borough, drawing
comparisons with current topics. History may not repeat
itself, but historical situations do! As usual at a Members Evening, before the talk there will be drinks available and a finger buffet, followed by the presentation of the Society's Annual Awards. |

Additional Information | The life of Lady Henry Somerset is the subject of Ros Black's first book. In her second, on which this talk is based, she focuses on the village Lady Henry built at Duxhurst, which is South of Sidlow and became a charitable community. | ||

Additional Information | Starting in 2009 survey work was carried out on Reigate Heath on behalf of the Surrey Archaeological Society. Rosemary will explain the conclusions that have been drawn and describe some of the previously unrecognised features which were found. | ||

Additional Information | St. Katharine's Church is 13th century, and is the oldest building in Merstham. The tapestry has been made by members of the church in aid of the restoration fund and Libby Green will give an an illustrated talk about the history of the church based on the squares of the tapestry. This will be the first Reigate Society talk to be held in the new Reigate Methodist Community Centre. | ||
