Reigate Society; Meetings Oct 2008 to Sep 2009

The Priory is built on the site of an Augustinian priory founded in about 1235. Very little of the medieval foundation survives, and it is only visible from inside the building. After the dissolution of the monasteries the property was granted to Lord Howard of Effingham in 1541, who erected a house on the site. The house assumed much of its present appearance during extensive rebuilding in about 1770. Edward VII and his mistress were frequent visitors to the Priory in the early 1900s. During 2007/2008 Priory Park was extensively re-modelled, and also maintenance work has been undertaken on the Priory itself.

Additional Information	Kevin Morgan became the Chief Executive of the Holmesdale Building Society in 2004. The Society was formed in 1855. Its first office was in Church Street, Reigate, where it remains to this day as an independent mutual building society.

Additional Information	John Howe is a long standing local resident and a member of the Reigate Society. He has made a study of pre Tudor Reigate, about which there is little published information.

Title of Talk	Brickwork in Surrey up to 1841	Guest Speaker	Ian West
Venue	Priory School, Bell Street, Reigate, RH2 7RL.
Additional Information	Ian West is a surveyor who has specialised for over thirty years in the restoration of historic buildings. Although the Romans had brickworks in Surrey, the manufacture of bricks in the county then lapsed and was not revived until mediaeval times. Ian's talk will cover the production of bricks and their use in building design up to the abolition of the brick tax in 1841.

Additional Information	Brenda Lewis was formerly Surrey County Council's Gardens Officer. She has an unparalleled knowledge of the history of Surrey's parks and gardens.

Additional Information	The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a voluntary scheme recording archaeological objects found by members of the public. It provides an important source of understanding about our past. David Williams is the Finds Liaison Officer in Surrey.

Additional Information	Chris Howkins will be talking about heathland plants and the ways in which people used them in the past. His planned talk to the Society in 2007 was cancelled because of bad weather, so we will be watching the barometer closely!
