Title of Talk Betchworth Castle, Past and Present Guest Speaker Martin Higgins
Venue Woodhatch Centre, Whitebeam Drive, off Hornbeam Road, Reigate, RH2 7LS.
Additional Information Betchworth Castle is one of the county's least known 'castles'. Martin Higgins will identify prehistoric features on the site, its time as an impressive medieval fortified manor house, its refurbishment as a country house for Sir John Soane, and its part demolition to form a romantic ruin in 1835. Martin recently purchased the ruins of Betchworth Castle from Mole Valley District Council and plans to consolidate the remains and make them freely available to the public.

Title of Talk News from Surrey Wildlife Trust Guest Speaker Nigel Davenport

Additional Information Nigel Davenport is the Chief Executive of Surrey Wildlife Trust (www.surreywildlifetrust.co.uk) which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary. The Trust now manages 80 nature reserves covering over 4,000 hectares of Surrey's countryside.

Additional Information Dennis Turner (past president of the Surrey Archaeological Society) is reluctant to reveal his plot but says that things are not always what they are thought to be.

Title of Talk Reigate's Heathland Riches Guest Speaker Jeremy Early

Additional Information Despite massive reductions over the last century, and continuing pressure necessitating vigorous defence, Surrey retains a significant body of heathland. The habitat offers stunning locations for fauna and flora as well as human relaxation and Reigate is well placed in this regard. Reigate Heath leads the way, backed by other smaller sites along the sandy Greensand Ridge. Jeremy Early, local photographer, naturalist and species recorder for Surrey Wildlife Trust, has a passion for Heathland which he is going to share with us when talking about Reigate's heathland riches. Title of Talk How Britain Manages its Waste Guest Speaker Lester Hicks
Venue Redhill UR Church Hall, Shaw's Corner, Hatchlands Rd, Redhill, RH1 8AU.
Additional Information Waste management is a contentious issue everywhere and, although we all generate waste either personally or through the goods and services we consume, no one wants waste to be managed anywhere near where they live. Lester Hicks was responsible for national planning policy on waste from 1997-2007 when in the Department for Communities and Local Government and its predecessors.
